A few days after I first came to Norway
I wanted to explore the city at night
I saw beautiful blond Norwegian young women
In nice dresses
Crawling on the sidewalks
And men in full suits
Crawling after them
They call it “fadderuke”
It is one week at the beginning of the university
where new Norwegian students are locked together into a group
given alcohol
and forced to socialize
Norwegians make friends for life during that week
The relationship Norwegians enjoy with alcohol can be surprising
I encourage Norwegians to drink
It makes them happy
They give each other physical contact
And many meet their partners like this
But I always suggest to “Prevent the crawling”
Enjoy Fadderuke
Have fun, party, hug, have sex
But prevent the crawling
Other Norwegians traditions including alcohol includes Russ, or the grown up version of it, Julebord
