Birkebeinerrittet - A Norwegian Tradition

Source: "The Social Guidebook to Norway"

Norwegians love to suffer

This physical sufferance allows them to build trust with other Norwegians

It increases their social status

In Norway, suffering is often required before enjoying the pleasures of life

You suffer first and enjoy afterwards

You jump into cold fjords and then enjoy a nice breakfast by the fireplace at the hytte

You cross country ski for 54km and get praise from society and your employer for your achievements

You do a physical activity first and then enjoy a dinner with your colleagues at the annual team building day at work

Yesterday was Birkebeinerrittet

An event created 27 years to allow those Norwegians who did not suffer enough during the traditional Birken to get another chance during the summer

It is particularly popular for those Norwegians which are in their 40's and 50's

The father of my girlfriend cycled for 86km yesterday

Today his family praised him

Tomorrow it will be his colleagues at work
